THE ROUTE

Hanifaru Manta & Whale Shark Expedition

Each year, plankton gathers in Hanifaru Bay, within Baa Atoll’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Manta rays come to feed and whale sharks may also be seen. The itinerary is designed around this remarkable wildlife event.

AMBA explores Baa and Raa. When manta or whale-shark activity is high, the schedule can change so guests can snorkel in Hanifaru Bay; scuba diving is not permitted inside the bay. Between visits, dives explore channels, reef walls, caves and coral gardens.

These trips run from July to September, when Hanifaru activity is often at its peak. The one-way route starts in Malé and ends at Dharavandhoo (Baa Atoll). The domestic flight back to Malé is not included; Atolliva can arrange it.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions about
this trip?

Can I scuba dive in Hanifaru Bay?

No. Only snorkelling is allowed in the bay to protect the mantas. Diving takes place at other sites in Baa and Raa.

When is the best time to see mantas at Hanifaru?

The season runs roughly from May to November. Larger feeding gatherings are often seen between July and September, when AMBA schedules this trip.

Will I see mantas?

Mantas are wild animals and activity varies with plankton conditions. There is a chance to see them, and the itinerary remains flexible so the boat can visit when activity is high.

How many dives do I need?

At least 10 logged dives, Advanced Open Water or equivalent, and a Nitrox certificate.

How do I return to Malé?

The trip ends at Dharavandhoo in Baa Atoll. The domestic flight back to Malé is not included; Atolliva can book it for you.

Are there extra fees?

A Hanifaru Bay visit fee and Maldives green tax apply. Ask us to confirm current charges for your sailing.
