THINGS TO DO
Diving in Maldives
Diving in the Maldives is one of the country’s signature experiences and a major reason many travellers return again and again. The appeal lies in variety: colourful coral reefs, pelagic encounters, dramatic channels, cleaning stations, and the possibility of seeing manta rays, reef sharks, eagle rays, turtles, whale sharks and vast schools of fish in a single trip.
Different atolls offer different strengths, and you can dive the Maldives in three very different ways: from a resort with a house reef, from a guesthouse on a local island with a dive centre close by, or from a liveaboard that moves between the best sites. This guide shows where each fits, and what we can arrange for you.
Where to dive, by area
- South Ari Atoll: the best-known area for whale sharks and manta rays, with the local islands of Dhigurah, Dhangethi and Omadhoo as bases. Whale sharks are seen here through much of the year, though no operator can guarantee a sighting.
- Rasdhoo and North Ari: steep walls and channels, reached from the small local island of Rasdhoo.
- Vaavu Atoll: channel diving and sharks, with Fulidhoo as a friendly local-island base.
- Baa Atoll and Hanifaru Bay: a seasonal manta spectacle, usually from July to September.
- Fuvahmulah: a single-island atoll in the far south, known worldwide for tiger shark diving. Sightings of thresher sharks and manta rays are also reported there. There are no direct international flights, so guests fly from Malé, about an hour and a half.
- North and South Malé Atolls: easy reef diving close to the airport, good for a first diving holiday or a short stay.
Dive from a guesthouse on a local island
Local-island stays keep a dive trip simple and good value. These are the guesthouses we work with where diving is a main reason to go:
- Cozy Nest Fuvahmulah: a new boutique hotel with a rooftop pool and restaurant, linked to Cozy Scuba Club and its tiger shark dives.
- Cozy Roots Fuvahmulah: the simpler, better-value choice on Fuvahmulah, with a rooftop pool and breakfast.
- Cozy Art Dhangethi: a boutique island hotel near Bikini Beach, with Cozy Scuba Club arranging whale shark and manta dives.
- Scuba Inn Omadhoo: a beachfront dive guesthouse for whale shark and manta lovers in South Ari.
- White Sand Dhigurah: a friendly guesthouse on Dhigurah with a PADI dive centre, from Discover Scuba to Divemaster.
- Beach Hotel Dhigurah: a 30-room hotel by Dhigurah’s bikini beach, in whale shark country.
- Jerry’s Dive Lodge, Rasdhoo: a simple, friendly base for divers, a short walk from the dive club.
- Luau Beach Inn, Fulidhoo: a family-run guesthouse in Vaavu Atoll with its own PADI 5-Star dive centre and a rooftop restaurant.
On Fuvahmulah and Dhangethi our partner is Cozy Scuba Club, which runs guided dives, including tiger shark dives on Fuvahmulah and whale shark and manta dives on Dhangethi. We can arrange the stay, the diving and the flights together.
Dive from a resort
A resort suits divers who want one island, a house reef and an on-site dive centre. Resorts we can quote for include:
- Embudu Village: a relaxed island 20 minutes from the airport with a house reef and the Diverland dive centre.
- Bandos Maldives: a big, sociable resort 10 to 15 minutes from the airport, with Dive Bandos on the island.
- Thulhagiri Island Resort: a small, green island 20 minutes from the airport, with a dive school and unlimited house reef diving.
- Radisson Blu Resort Maldives: big pool villas with South Ari’s reefs on the doorstep.
- Outrigger Maafushivaru: a compact South Ari island with a house reef and pool villas.
- Diamonds Athuruga: a classic South Ari island with a house reef and an all-inclusive stay.
Dive from a liveaboard
A liveaboard lets you reach the best sites across several atolls and usually dive three times a day, with your cabin, meals and crew always close by. We work with three operators, all departing from Malé.
AMBA Maldives
AMBA runs dive safaris for certified divers, with Nitrox included. Central routes usually ask for at least 30 logged dives and an Advanced Open Water certification or equivalent; the Deep South route asks for 60 and some current experience. Routes we offer:
- 7 nights: Corals, Channels & Sharks (South Ari, Vaavu and Malé)
- 11 nights: Central Maldives, North route
- 11 nights: Central Maldives, South route
- 8 nights: Hanifaru Manta & Whale Shark expedition (Baa Atoll, July to September)
- 13 nights: Deep South, with Fuvahmulah tiger sharks
- 14 nights: Christmas & New Year
Scubaspa Maldives
Scubaspa Maldives is a luxury dive and spa liveaboard: two identical 50-metre yachts, Scubaspa Yin and Scubaspa Yang, with 17 suites and space for up to 34 guests. It suits couples and groups who want serious diving, a spa and a more relaxed pace in the same trip. You can check departures and an estimated price on the page.
Voyages Maldives
Voyages Maldives has run traditional timber safari boats since 1980, each with a captain, crew and chef. The fleet includes Gurahali, Sea Farer, Kethi, Koimala, Gulfaam and Gahaa, and is well suited to private charters for friends, families and dive groups who want a flexible route.
Dive-and-stay packages
If you would rather have the stay, transfers and trips planned together, start with these:
- Whale Shark Escape, Dhigurah: five nights in whale shark country in South Ari, with diving trips and speedboat transfers.
- Cozy Escape to Dhangethi: seven nights near Bikini Beach, with boat snorkelling and night fishing. Dives with Cozy Scuba Club can be added.
- Fulidhoo Island & Reef Escape: four nights in Vaavu Atoll with reef, shark and sandbank trips.
Planning your dive holiday
- Choose by what you want to see. Whale sharks and mantas point to South Ari, tiger sharks to Fuvahmulah, channels and sharks to Vaavu and Ari, and a gentle first dive to the atolls near Malé. Visibility, plankton and marine life shift through the year, and wildlife can never be guaranteed.
- Check your certification. Many dive centres welcome beginners, while advanced sites and liveaboard safaris ask for logged dives and an Advanced Open Water certification or equivalent. Tell us your level and we will match it to the right trip.
- Bring cover and papers. Travel insurance with dive cover, and your certification card and logbook, are expected by most operators.
- Mind your flight home. Dive centres usually advise at least 18 hours between your last dive and a flight, so do not book an early departure the morning after diving.
- Travelling with non-divers? Snorkelling trips, sandbanks and island stays keep everyone happy while you dive. Most of our dive stays suit mixed groups.
Atolliva Maldives can help you choose the right diving holiday based on experience level, budget, and travel style. Whether you want a resort with an excellent dive centre, a guesthouse close to good reefs, or a liveaboard focused on diving routes, tell us your dates and we will guide you to the Maldives experience that fits you best.
