THE ROUTE

Best of Central Maldives – North Route

From Malé, AMBA heads west to Ari Atoll, known for whale-shark encounters and manta cleaning stations. The route then turns north to Rasdhoo, where steep outer walls and strong channel currents bring the possibility of grey reef sharks and hammerheads.

The second half crosses to Vaavu, known for fast-flowing kandus (channels) and memorable night dives. The final dives around North and South Malé Atoll combine healthy reefs with wreck sites.

This route suits divers looking for a varied week at sea: big animals, drift dives, colourful thilas (underwater pinnacles) and a night dive in the central Maldives.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions about
this trip?

How experienced do I need to be?

You need Advanced Open Water or equivalent, a Nitrox certificate and at least 30 logged dives. Some channel dives have strong currents, so you should be comfortable diving with your buddy and using a surface marker buoy.

How many dives are there?

Usually three a day, including a night dive and a sunset dive. There is no diving on the first and last days; the final dive is on the morning before you leave the boat.

What is the difference between the North and South routes?

Both start in Malé and cover Ari and Vaavu. The North route adds Rasdhoo, while the South route continues to Meemu.

Can I fly on the day I leave the boat?

Allow at least 24 hours after your last dive before flying. The final dive is planned for the morning of the day before checkout.
