FEATURED ISLAND · NORTH ARI ATOLL
The farming island with fresh fruit and quiet beaches. Best for quiet island stays, farm and fruit lovers, couples, and manta and sandbank trips.
ABOUT THE ISLAND
Thoddoo is a different kind of Maldivian island. Most of it is farmland, and it supplies much of the country's watermelon, papaya and other fruit, so a walk or bicycle ride here passes fields and palms instead of busy streets.
Guest tourism has grown quietly since 2015, with family-run guesthouses, a handful of restaurants and boats for excursions. It stays calm and friendly, and many guests say that is exactly why they come.
FEATURED STAY ON THODDOO
Ale Sara is a 12-room guesthouse built around a leafy garden courtyard, with single, double and triple rooms and your choice of breakfast, half board or full board. The team arranges sandbank and snorkelling trips, manta and dolphin outings, night fishing and a farm tour, and bicycles are available to explore the island. It suits couples, friends and small groups who want a relaxed stay on a real Maldivian island.
FAMOUS FOR
Thoddoo is the Maldives' best-known farming island, famous for watermelon, papaya and other fruit and vegetables. Farmers welcome visitors on the trails, but please ask before picking anything.
One beach on the west side is the more social one, perfect for sunset. A quieter beach on the north-east has fewer people. Beyond them there are long empty stretches of coast for walking in modest clothing.
Boat trips leave from the island for sandbanks, manta and shark spotting, dolphin watching and night fishing. Sightings are never guaranteed, and the guides follow the conditions of the day.
Nearby Rasdhoo is an easy day trip for island hopping. On Thoddoo itself, remains from the island's pre-Islamic Buddhist past are part of its history, and you may spot fruit bats at dusk.
HOW TO GET THERE
Ferry and speedboat times change by season and by day. Share your flight and we confirm the right transfer for your dates.
Thoddoo is about 75 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport, with scheduled departures in the morning and afternoon in each direction. Seats are limited, so we choose a boat that matches your flight when you book.
A public ferry also serves the island on set days, but it is slow and infrequent, so most guests take the speedboat.
